Type 316 stainless steel has a higher nickel content than 304 stainless, plus molybdenum, for greater corrosion resistance from caustic chemicals, corrosive fluids, oils, and gases, and withstands pressure and high temperatures. 304 pipe connects with fittings to transport air, water, natural gas, steam, and chemicals to storage tanks and in residential plumbing, and kitchen and food applications. 316 pipe connects with fittings to transport air, water, natural gas, steam and chemicals in chemical manufacturing, industrial and chemical transportation, and food production and processing. Stainless steel is available in pipe lengths over 12" and nipple lengths 12" and shorter.

304 stainless steel tube has become the most versatile and widely used stainless steel sheet among austenitic stainless steels due to its high chromium-nickel content and low carbon content. 304 stainless steel, sometimes referred to as"18-8", has better corrosion resistance than 301 stainless steel or 302 stainless steel, and has excellent tensile and forming characteristics. It will provide satisfactory service at high temperatures, although carbide precipitation may occur with prolonged exposure in the temperature range of 800°F-1600°F.
